Count Me In: A Parade of Mexican Folk Art

Count Me In: A Parade of Mexican Folk Art: Numbers in English and Spanish, is one of five Mexican folk art books available for children to learn school basics. (The other book subjects available are ABCs, colors, opposites and animal sounds). Specifically, Count Me In follows performers in traditional Mexican dress through a parade, counting groups of participants from 1-10. Text is presented in English and Spanish, with 1-2 sentences per page, with the corresponding number on the opposite page. As quoted by author Cynthia Weill on her website, "My books use folk arts from around the world to illustrate basic concepts for children. The current series employs handicrafts commissioned from artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico." Illustrations are handmade from materials such as wood, ceramics, tin, and papier mache, and it can take months-years to make many of the pieces. The final products are part of a permanent Mesoamerican collection at The Field Museum in Chicago. For now, I have found the text itself to be a little advanced for my near 3 year old, but hope to keep reintroducing it in the future, in the hopes that she will appreciate the book's artwork and cultural background.
