Viva Frida

Yet another award-winning title from the Mexican author/illustrator Yuyi Morales is her "Viva Frida", a 2015 Caldecott Honor Book. Reviews describe this picture book as "luminescent" and "dreamlike", which I could not agree with more. Each page has one or two words in English and Spanish, such as "I feel", "I love", and "I live". Morales used acrylic paints, photography, and stop-motion puppets made from steel, polymer clay, and wool. At the end of the book she writes a moving note on her Frida Kahlo and the pride she feels when thinking of her. This book could probably appeal to any age based on the simplicity of language, but it is probably much more special when being able to know more of the background of Frida's life.
