La Frontera is the true story of a Father and Son's journey from a small village in Mexico to find a better life where they could provide for the rest of their family. The son is the oldest of 4 children and must leave his beloved family to help his Father Raymundo (or, "King of the World!). His mother tells the son to be strong and swift, like a bird, and try not to look back what he must leave behind. He reflects on his life in Mexico and how much it makes him happy. The journey to a new place is not easy, both physically and emotionally. They must pass through rivers, mountains, valleys, and fences. On entering Texas, the son describes the difficulties of having to learn English and attend a new school.
The vivid illustrations fully capture the emotions of each of the members of the family. The book provides history at the end of the story, with photographs of some of the real figures the book is based on. There is a lot of text, written in top in Spanish and underneath in English, and this would probably be too much wording for the early elementary school reader, but would be a wonderful resource for the older child looking to increase their cultural awareness and learn facts all about the process of immigration.
