10 Musical Crafts To Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

Just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, 10 Musical Crafts To Celebrate Hispanic Heritage offers a variety of educational activities for families not only in music, but art and world culture. In this book one learns the background of 10 musical instruments from places ranging from Spain and Africa, to Cuba and South America. Crafts are detailed for how to make instruments from bongo drums and maracas to ones I previously had never heard of such as the guiro and quijada. Ten instruments are included in all in addition to five coloring pages.

I know personally that my kids LOVE playing drums from common household items- similarly, Daria incorporates use of objects such as straws, cardboard tubes, buttons and egg cartons to create easy but beautiful looking instruments.  Check out for example this picture of "back to school" maracas, one of 3 types of maracas she provides instructions for!

Some reasons I enjoy this product are:

The projects foster creativity, including learning all about how the instruments work, as well as obviously, art, by how one might decorate their instrument.

As an advocate of bilingualism and multilingualism, I especially enjoyed the fact that by reading this book kids can learn use of basic Spanish words.

Children will learn all about history as it relates to Hispanic culture, of even the most basic instruments such as the guitar, as well as that of some of the most unique instruments in the world, such as a rattle made from sheep and goat toenails threaded onto a piece of fabric resembling a bracelet.

The book's creator, World Music with Daria, was recently granted The Parent and Teacher Choice award from Howtolearn.com, which you can read all about here.

The book appears best targeted for parents to work with elementary school aged kids.
