I think this is an important introductory read for kids in encouraging awareness of other languages and cultures. The book uses examples of real-world photography one might encounter in a regular day going out in a city like New York or San Francisco. It also begins to raise the point of just how many languages exist in our world, rather than just concentrating on the more popular ones a child might know. I like how it gives an example of the experience of one family's upbringing of a little girl and her exposure to a different language from each parent and questioning whether her first word would be in one language or another, displaying the relatively common usage of "One Person One Language" utilized in bilingual households. The book also familiarizes children with the fact that they may encounter different languages in and outside the home such as in the school setting. The book keeps concepts basic and to the point, another plus for young readers. Such a book is a great addition to enhancing a young one's cultural competence and awareness of the world around us.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
