Little one's books for Day of the Dead / Dia de los Muertos

To study and teach a foreign language it is crucial to also learn about one's culture. Learning more about Dia de los Muertos has a special significance for me though as a practicing Catholic. It is also very personal for me, as my first child, Alexander Lloyd, was delivered into this world stillborn on November 2nd, 2014, All Souls Day. Alexander is the reason for so much of who I am today; particularly, my inspiration for so much of what I do as a mother, and teacher to others. Five bilingual picture books for Hispanic Heritage Month

For Hispanic Heritage Month, I've comprised a list of bilingual picture books perfect for young ones looking for educational but fun reads that will further their Spanish language skills. Here are some of my faves- I Love Saturdays y domingos is a tale by beloved author Alma Flor Ada. This story incorporates basic Spanish words ranging from colors, animals, and numbers, to so much more! This is a great book about family bonding perfect for reading over and over again. Amelia's Show-and-Tell Fiesta tells the story of a girl in a new school planning to share something very special for show and tell. This book demonstrates how families sometimes have difficulties keeping cultural traditions in new places, and how to find inspiration to keep showcasing these wherever life may take us. Blue Frog: The Legend of Chocolate tells the story of how the Wind God, dressed as a blue frog, is able to lead young children to the Sun God&

Dia de los muertos

Here are some more recommended reads to help familiarize your little ones with Dia de los Muertos- Dia de los Muertos, by Roseanne Greenfield Thong, is an English text written in rhyme that introduces Spanish vocabulary terms for those who are non-native speakers. I find that it gives such a nice background for the elementary school aged group regarding this sacred and important holiday! Day of the Dead by Tony Johnston, is another English text with Spanish vocabulary terms and is easy for younger ones to read on the go given its relatively smaller size. Bonus- the illustrator, Jeanette Winter, also has another text, Calavera Abecedario: A Day of the Dead Alphabet, which I also have to check out for next time! La Catrina, by Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein, is a board book for the smallest of readers (infants) with lovely illustrations themed from the Day of the Dead, introducing one to a variety of feelings!
