Reading this text totally in Spanish was a bit intimidating for me as a non-native speaker, but the story is a must-read, whether you check it out in English or Spanish. Written by Maya Soetoro-Ng, sister of Barack Obama, the book follows a girl named Suhaila who one day asks about the grandmother she never met. Her mother answers that her grandmother was like the moon. That evening Suhaila climbs a golden ladder to meet her grandmother up in the moon. The image of Suhaila jumping into her grandmother's arms and being held by her grandmother could not be more heavenly. One part of the book I especially like are the images of prayer and unity amongst religions. The illustrations are breathtaking; the story, as if displaying a dream come to life. I will probably be reserving this book for when my daughter is probably closer to 7 or 8 at the least, as right now, she is probably too young to appreciate all its beauty, outside and in.
